Cash Rich, House Poor

The need for financial stability is at an all-time high due to constant cost of living increases. It is necessary to look at different options available to create an income stream, and to understand the best route to achieve the desired and best outcome.

It is imperative that as Attorney’s we are able to serve our elderly clients who find themselves “House Rich, Cash Poor”.

Three potential solutions are available to ease concerns regarding creating a pot of cash and generating income flow. These solutions can ease financial strain and help bring peace of mind along with a higher quality of life to remaining years. Such potential solutions are:

1. The new rules for Reverse Mortgages
2. Charitable Remainder Trusts - to avoid all or most of the Capital Gain tax on sales
3. Installment Sales options - to defer and possibly avoid much of the Capital Gain tax on sale

Ultimately, the goal is to be knowledgeable of these options and to utilize all strategies that are available in order to help your clients get the most of what they have.
