If you are interested improving the law and enjoying one of the most rewarding professional experiences of your career, please consider joining the Executive Committee of the Trusts and Estates Section (TEXCOM) of the California Lawyers Association.  TEXCOM will soon be nominating 5 new members to serve on its Executive Committee commencing September 2018.  A TEXCOM member serves a total term of 6 years.

TEXCOM’s goals are to protect the public by enhancing the administration of justice in the area of trusts and estates and to improve the practice of law and the standard of practice among its members.  In furthering these goals, TEXCOM is responsible for the publication of the Trusts and Estates Quarterly and the Ethics Guide as well as the production of the highest quality continuing legal education programs.  TEXCOM also sponsors affirmative legislative proposals and provides critical expertise and input on pending legislation.  Volunteers who serve on TEXCOM play a vital role in assisting TEXCOM in fulfilling these goals.

TEXCOM, as an executive committee, meets in person at least six times a year, sometimes more as the workload demands. These meetings are typically held on Saturdays, usually from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  They are held in various geographical locations throughout the state.  Each TEXCOM member is also assigned to as many as five of the 16 standing committees.  As a member progresses in tenure, he or she may be appointed to serve as chair of one of these committees.  These committees usually meet at least once a month via telephone conference, and they take the laboring oar in tackling the projects assigned to them by TEXCOM.  The executive committee and standing committee meetings are really only the start of the work for a TEXCOM member.  Some may be tasked to lead or participate in a working group assigned a particular project.  They may be assigned to review, monitor, draft a position letter, testify or even speak with the author about pending legislation.  They may draft legislation, review all or a portion of uniform acts, or undertake a study of an issue that has been raised by a member of the Section or the public.  They might devote a good portion of time to writing a scholarly article for the Quarterly, speaking at an education program, participating in our Educating Seniors project, or just lending their experience and expertise as needed.

Executive Committee members enjoy the benefits of working with a dedicated group of trusts and estates attorneys practicing at the highest levels throughout the state.

Ideal candidates will be experienced in trusts and estates and committed to continuing the important work of TEXCOM.  We look for planners, litigators, and others with a strong depth of knowledge in their specialty.

Applications are due on March 1, 2018.  The application form can be found here:
